I guess there's a finer line than I thought between "Give up everything you believe in and become exactly like us" and "You really can't treat people like that here." I've seen you discuss U.S. assimilation versus Canadian integration before, and I must admit I occasionally see some benefits to the melting pot over the patchwork quilt.

Brian, I really appreciate you writing, it's nice to know you're out there checking in once in a while. Nice name, too.

Hey, I just tracked you back to your blog. Congratulations on the baby! Nothing changed my life more than becoming a father. Best of luck to you, Karen and Adam. I'm really happy for you.Brian Fieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16347700145666751363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16899684.post-91574381060861235152007-02-23T05:59:00.000-08:002007-02-23T05:59:00.000-08:00Hey Brian, I enjoyed reading these reviews and wil...Hey Brian, I enjoyed reading these reviews and will definitely seek these titles out. Charlie was nice enough to pass along a proof copy of "Wimpy Kid", which I devoured in one sitting. As a fellow former boy, I couldn't agree more on how relatable the whole thing was - it did indeed feel very genuine (loved Rowley's Dad having to approve the games and I myself once used the exact same workaround that Greg did). I also loved the visual style, especially how little brother Manny looked so small and helpless! Fun stuff and I'm looking forward to further installments in the series.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11470211316872795240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16899684.post-1660346488134398702007-02-22T07:14:00.000-08:002007-02-22T07:14:00.000-08:00Vis-a-vis the story about being told that there ar...Vis-a-vis the story about being told that there are no handicapped people in North Korea, one of the challenges that certain immigrants face when integrating into Canadian society is encountering "out" gay people and having to learn that they are not allowed to discriminate against or refuse to deal with a person because he or she is gay. In discussions with them about this, I have repeatedly been told firmly, by people from several (usually Islamic) states, "We don't have that in my country".

No amount of gentle suggestion that, "oh, you must, it is part of the human condition, it is just hidden in your country", will convince them otherwise...ronniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14044863062652781155noreply@blogger.com
